Dawn Powell

Ordinary Council Member of the Porcupine Marine Natural History Society

Dawn’s interest in the marine environment began at an early age watching Jacques Cousteau’s documentaries and seeing National Geographic underwater images of tropical seas. This later developed into an amateur obsession with shark ecology and behaviour amongst other things, prompting her to return to higher education to gain a degree in Zoology with Marine Zoology from Bangor University. There Dawn discovered that marine invertebrates were also cool critters, and she turned her attention to molluscs, polychaetes and other benthic beasties and their importance to the marine ecosystem. Having gained work experience at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences and the Natural History Museum in London in marine taxonomy of pelagic and benthic fauna, working alongside eminent research biologists, she undertook an MSc in Oceanography and a PhD on the reproductive ecology of Antarctic molluscs at the National Oceanography Centre. Her PhD research work fulfilled a life-long dream to be involved with the British Antarctic Survey and have an Antarctic adventure, and it was all that and more, with a spell on an Antarctic Base, conducting scuba dives in icy waters populated by icebergs and an array of very cool invertebrate species. On completion of her PhD, Dawn was employed to assist in setting up a new environmental survey department and commercial taxonomic laboratory at Svitzer in Great Yarmouth. Once this was successful, she moved back to Wales for a change of scenery, and joined the museum at Cardiff working as a taxonomist on the Outer Bristol Channel Project with Andy Mackie and team. On completion of this project, Dawn joined EMU Ltd in Hampshire as a marine ecologist/taxonomist, later managing the taxonomic laboratory. Dawn’s role at EMU (now Fugro EMU Ltd) has been diverse and she progressed to Principal Marine Ecology Consultant reporting for, and advising commercial companies who wish to use the marine environment and its abundant resources on the ways and means to do so following the regulations set by Government agencies. She is now working as an independent Consultant.
